On June 30th, 2008, digging began on 82nd Avenue in Kew Gardens, Queens, NY for a 21 story hotel and residential unit. The construction surprised many in the neighborhood and would change the nature of the community for those who live there. There are valid arguments against the construction of this structure as proposed, including the impact of having a 21 story combination hotel and residential building on a block where traffic is already an issue, a school exists around the corner, parking nearby would become even more difficult, and the construction can compromise the foundation of adjoining buildings. The first demonstration and rally organized by community residents protested this project in early July. Their action and calls to the city complaining about work violations at the building site resulted in a work stoppage order which has been in effect during the months of July and August. However, permits have been obtained to continue building. A second demonstration took place on 82nd Avenue, in front of the Pasta Lovers parking lot on Thursday afternoon, August 21. In attendance were City Council Member Tony Avella. Assembly Woman Nettie Mayersohn was represented, as was Congressman Anthony Weiner. Local media was also in attendance, including New York 1 News, and the The Daily News. Residents of the neighborhood stood together for their community, their future and their equity. It was gratifying to see residents, elected officials, aspiring elected officials and the media recognize the issues surrounding the building of a 21 story structure in a residential area, one that would change the neighborhood and the lives of everyone who currently lives there. To prevent this project from going forward, action must be taken now. Please contact courtviewowners@hotmail.com to lend your support and find out what you can do to help. Also, tell your friends, neighbors, elected officials and local media that neighborhoods belong to the people who live there, not entrepreneurs who live elsewhere who seek to make money by radically altering them. There are 80 million family homes in America and those homeowners are now facing the reality that the bubble has burst and prices go down as well as up. Of those 80 million homeowners, only 55 million have a mortgage at all, and 51 million are doing what is necessary -- working a second job, skipping a vacation, and managing their budgets -- to make their payments on time. Now I am 22 years old, and I live in Nelson. At home, with my Mum and Dad and younger brother. Nelson's a bit BORING, but living at home is SWEET. That's why I'm still here. My mum makes my bed, and she cooks my dinner, and she does my washing, and lends me her car and she lends me money, that's my favourite part. Now, I am nanny. I look after a one, two and four year old. My days are unpredictable and crazy, but I really really enjoy it. But, I've kind of reached the point in my life where I'm sort of like: 'Ok, so I've had my fun. I've done this and I've done that. Now it's time that I settled down'. But before I settle down, I wanna be like 'yeah, so I did this and that BUTTT I also did The Edge's top friends'. *thumbs up* Iiii think the fact that there's 10,000$ involved...Well, that wouldn't hurt anybody! If I was lucky enough to get into the competition, and then successful enough to last four weeks and I woke up one day and there was 10,000$ in my bank account....I would...go to Canada. Butt...ah....If my parents see this....By go to Canada I mean, pay you back what I owe you OK? Hi Mum! Hi Dad! I'm on TV. Ahhh....have they gone? Yep! Cool! I would go to Canada, I actually went over in September last year, and I was deported from Vancouver airport. So now that it's been a year, I'm "legally" allowed to go back into Canada. I have an amazing base of friends over there. And also, there's this guy, at immigrations, who I delt with, and I owe him a slap...or seven. Sooo..I'd like to be able to get there soon. And do that. Now I absolutely, I love New Zealand music, I love my friends, I love my family, And I love my dog. She's pretty much the cutest thing I have EVER seen. I also love social networking. I mean, I like it, It's OK. My Dad thinks I'm obsessed, but I'm not, I mean, my MySpace is fine, if I don't write a new comment every day, and if I don't give a FaceBook status update every half hour the world isn't gonna abort, my Bebo's fine, if I don't get a new skin for it every week.
